Very strange, we'll watch for any further lack of xp issues. Please keep me posted if you see any occurances of this with your PCs, screen captures help us track the problem too.

Be well. Game on!

I know why this is!

As I and DM Darkness already found out, XP is only applied if your level is not more than 5 levels higher or more than 5 levels lower than the creatures level.

The only exception I found yet was the silver golem who even gave XP to a level 25 while having a CR of 40

wow, this seems totally unfair. i can understand not giving xp if a party member is way above your level, but not giving xp because the opponent is? that seems more like penalizing creative and/or daring play.

can a builder confirm that this is what's happening? if so, i'd like to propose that the xp script be amended. What a Face

i think there are better ways to prevent power-leveling, though. for example, controlling what spawns where, and how frequently. this seems to be working well on a-r ; i've taken my character through many, many areas in and around dohral, tivook, the east citadel, and humfoo [er... don't remember the exact name, anyway, the 'other place' you can get to from tivook, lol] and mostly what i encounter is miles and miles of empty, winding forest, w/no hostile spawns. [there are occasionally rude farmers who assault my character w/insults. affraid ] anyway, not much of a risk of power-leveling.

regardless, a player takes increasingly difficult risks as the cr of the encounter increases. more resources are used up, the risk of dying becomes much greater. those risks should be rewarded if the pc wins the battle.

It goes off average party levels. If your partied with higher levels, and go off killing, you will get that message.

Solution: Unparty.

no, that wasn't the situation at all.

i was solo'ing, i killed an elemental, i got no xp for it.

as i said above, i can understand a cap to xp eligibility for level range in-party. i don't agree at all w/a cap to eligibility based solely on your level being much lower than the encounter level if you're not in a party.

just waiting now for the powers-that-be to answer as to whether or not it really is the case that you don't earn any xp if you're much lower than the opponent you defeat.

To be honest, the xp scripts have changed a lot over the years and I'll have to review them to see if this is indeed the case. We can discuss it here after I do my research.

Be well. Game on.
