Forum Addition (great idea)

I was thinking of some sort of constantly, or at least every 5-10 minutes, updating box that will relay server information, like status (online, offline, players online, maximum capacity).

this would mean we could check the forums to see if the server is online, (maybe even show the characters online too?) instead of having to load up nwn and then get all sad cause it's down.

That is easy enough if you have php based forums and a MySQL database running on the server host. There is a package you can get off nwnvault that will show you server status and list the players and dms currently online.

I proposed that a few months ago but it never got going, and now that i'm passing the forums over to ehye i'm not sure if i'll get enough time before hand to integrate the systems ^^

First, we are all about security here, I don't have time nor energy to battle miscreants, so I keep my doors locked. Every software package has its inherent risks and benefits. I have reviewed these carefully (as I always do,) and I'm not interested in running MySQL on the server at all. The data is available by starting your NWN software and looking, the request is to make the same data available on a web page (start your browser and look). There is, to my mind, no net gain to be had here, and only hazards and my time to be lost. So, no, I'm not interested in posting this data to the web page nor the forum.

If you wish to know who is on the server, start your NWN software, and find it listed in ROLE PLAY or your NWN HISTORY, this shows how many are online. To see who is online, click the server and JOIN it, all the rest of the details are displayed there.

I dont quite see how they conflict, one is about making character levels and classes unseeable, this is about making character names and server status viewable online.

Though you bring up some points I did not think about, since there is a chance miscreants will ruin my nwn time, I retract my idea. lol

It is a security risk if not done properly and perhaps more risk than its worth. Allthough, having a database running under the mod offers some other interesting functionality for realtime interaction between mod and web site.

Check and update the in-game bulletin board, see who's currently online, swap tells with ingame pc's, listen to the latest pc conversion overheard by npc's in the Tivook Inn common room all via a web page. Stuff like that. It's a lot of overhead though, database servers, web servers and nwnx.

NWNX is where we draw a line, I won't touch it for anything. I'm not sure what advantages there are to allowing players to not login and participate, after all, we'd like folks to login and play. Being a RP server, sending tells from people not in game, that says 'immersion breaking' to me. I thank you for helping me understand what it is one can do with this stuff better, but I think it not a good match for our server. Overhead that helps the game play, that I can endorse, overhead to distract from game play? I'll give it a miss. Thanks though, I appreciate your help.

1) When an email is received, either about a forum post or PM, it would be cool to be able to read the post in the email and reply back to the email to reply back to the post.

2) The mobile version of our forum (yes, apparently we have one) does not allow you to access your PMs, you have to convert to the full website.
