Is it possible to script in a bar, that shows how much has been donated and what the goal is per month?

Also, donated.

Middle of the month the payment is due ... so close to 20 days. Still, urgent.

ODA wrote:The company offers an option to reduce monthly cost by $50 for each $500 put down on the new server; this essentially means the customer foots the cost of the hardware up front, but *shrugs* if we make the funding level, we'll do that - as is we pay what amounts to $65 a month - if we make the mark, we could reduce that to just $15 per month!!!

^ From server funding topic

$65 is pretty expensive as a monthly fee as a whole... I'm thinking perhaps everyone forking together for that $500 mark is the way to go.

Of course, nobody wants to throw away $500 just like that, but I'm WILLING to go for abooout $161 (£100) only if everyone else is up for chipping in for the $500 mark as well.

I may pay for a little bit more if we're slightly off mark. But that's about it :/

Please post here if you're up trying to hit that mark, and how much you plan on donating? (So we can make sure that we HIT the mark.)

I've donated about £30 ($48), but could push for another £30 (Making it $96 in total).

Reducing the monthly amount to $15 would be perfect.

Hmmm..

I have some old components sitting here... Not sure how big a cut ebay will give me on them but I can defiantly put them up. Its rough, preemptive and depends a lot on what people are willing to pay but i MIGHT be able to squeeze another 100 out.

It is always good to have a plan B.

Plan A - we achieve the money needed to get the new server (price to be determined but comparable to present) - AND the discount for 'money down' on the thing.

Plan B - we achieve enough money to pay the present servers' price (atm $195 per three months) and then use the next three months to build up money to implement Plan A next billing cycle.

Sound good? Our hosting is done through hivelocity.net (an excellent hosting company - solid, FAST service, and we've been with them since the opening of this nwn server in 2006).

You can see their various offers for dedicated servers here:

I would rather my money go toward the future improvement of the server hosting, not the immediate heavy monthly cost that it is at the moment... Don't want to spend more money than I have to. I'm sure many people can agree...

ODA exactly how much money has been raised in total so far (For this month/3 months), and roughly how much money do we need to upgrade the hosting to $15 a month? Will it be $565 in total? $515? (Initial $500, then current month subscription? idk)

So we have a good idea of the situation here.

THIS PAGE is updated 1 or 2 times a week atm and shows the funding level for anyone who is curious.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

The number shown there is presently correct, we have donations totalling $80.80 as of this writing.

Our hosting provider would be happier if we migrated to a new server as the present machine does not fit in well with their latest data center setup (technology evolves, and they constantly reduce size of things to fit more into less space ... this older machine is 'big and clunky' compared to their newer hardware). Toward this end, the company has made a couple offers in the recent past to entice me to migrate to newer hardware. Prices and offers change with time, so I've not bothered to negotiate a firm deal with them yet (I will do so as we get closer to the day of the deal and I have a better idea of what level of funding I have available). Please see their website for an overview of the 'Dedicated Server' options

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

the new server and the old server do not compare 'apples-for-apples' due to evolving technology - we'd look for a single processor and about 8gigs of ram to get as close to what we now have as is possible (we have iirc a single processor, dual core, with 4 gigs of ram), other details include we have FIVE IPs (which are planned to host additional modules as we expand).

While I understand you'd like to donate toward, for example, plan a, understand that if we do not at least make server funding by mid November, the server will close. Also, donations are 'general fund' donations and I do not segregate one donation from another; it all goes to the same purpose, paying the server costs.

We have a long long relationship with this hosting company, they have learned over the last eight years that we are a GOOD CUSTOMER, not only do we pay our bill promptly but we do not bother their tech support unduly. Unlike the typical client, we don't generally bother them with questions or problems until we KNOW it is hardware related (and Erin is pure genius here)... this makes us a low-cost client to maintain. Because of this and the long-term nature of our hosting, and the company wanting us on more modern hardware, I think I can negotiate a deal slightly better than that shown on their web site, hence I am reticent to name a firm price on this proposed deal.

When we get 1 week out from the due date, I'll have a better idea of how much money is available and will enter negotiations at that time. Once we have a deal, they generally roll out the new system in about 4 hours or less... migration of the files and security setup should take a couple hours under Erin's genius supervision. I wish I could give you a more certain view of the future, but it is not in all honestly possible at this point in time.

We are at a point now, where after a lull in updates (caused by a really bad year for ODA [major corruption issue in module requiring intense diagnostics, death of beloved pet, hospitalization of my 80+year old father]) and later by Erin's loss of computer as in 'motherboard fried'), we are returned to regular updates, ODA with his life in order again and Erin with a new motherboard.

Many have enjoyed this server since its debut in 2006, and until 2012 all that fun was all at my expense. Erin, myself and our small staff all toil here as a labor of love. We have demonstrated both our extreme competence and our long dedication to the project, but we cannot support it by our labor alone. Professional hosting of this nature is essential to the project as it preserves our anonymity, gains us uber-broadband service, redundant power and Internet connections and hardware repairs (when anything fails) same day (in our experience repairs within an hour). Since 2012, this is a PLAYER SUPPORTED SERVER. I can only urge you all, if you enjoy the server and you are at all able to do so, please, open up your wallet and show some love.

For those of you who cannot donate in the monetary sense GET OUT THERE AND HELP US TELL THE GENERAL PUBLIC HOW COOL THIS SERVER REALLY IS! Post on the bioware threads, the reddit and facebook pages dedicated to this server! It is only by reaching people who do not yet play here that we will GROW the playerbase. YOUR voice can help!

Re: Step up! No Excuses!

Post  cjc180 on Mon Oct 27, 2014 10:16 am

Alright.

My only concern now is how this inevitable upgrade onto the higher spec servers will play out.

After paying the $500 for the cheaper subscription, would the eventual move over to the new & improved tech cause a rise once again to the usual subscription to roughly $50 again?...

Hope I don't come out rude! I just want to know if we should have the move-over to high tech servers first, THEN pay the $500, or if we should go vice versa.

I don't know if hivelocity are going to force you to upgrade at some point or not, but if they do, we could be back up with a heavy monthly fee. (Which is actually a typical fee for a dedicated server, it's a good price for the service you've listed, so I don't doubt this provider) I just want to make sure we (or at least try to!) pick the best option.

Over what you've said though (I appreciate the detail Very Happy Wouldn't expect less from you ODA, lol) I think it's probably going to have to be that we raise the money now with high hopes, and on the final week, you (ODA) get down to haggling for a good deal... Once again, my biggest concern here is the eventual turn over to the high spec stuff... Maybe because they want us to switch over, we'll get a cheaper monthly price... And then perhaps if we throw that extra $500, we'll be able to move over to more modern server, with a cheaper price around $25/month?...

We're going to still need people to pitch in to this though.

Current money pool = $80.80

Potential amount from cjc = $161

Potential amount from Elgate = $48

Potential amount from Shar = $100

Current estimated amount = $389.80

We're getting close people, just $110.2 to hit that mark. So help me I'll pay the $65/month subscription if we have to on the side as well. If we need to.

Just get that $500.

The host company likes us as customers so much and wants us on modern racks THIS badly:

email wrote:" We would like to take this opportunity to offer you an opportunity to purchase a new server from us at a discounted rate. Your current system is older and one of our legacy bakers rack type systems. We would like to offer you a 25% lifetime discount on any of our contemporary solutions found here- [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] . We can have one of these servers online for you within about 4 hours. Each of these systems is built on a Dell or SuperMicro rack mounted chassis. Each system includes IPMI access, 1Gbps NICs, superior reliability and performance. This offer is valid until this coming Friday at 5pm (8/15/14). We are, of course, happy to continue serving you on your existing server and apologize for any inconvenience this maintenance window may cause you.

If you would like to discuss the purchase of a new server and the 25% discount please open a live chat with our sales department at [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] "

So basically you can view any posted price with the above noted discount to us (long-time low-hassle highly-capable customers). BTW ignore the date on there, my sales contact assured me they'd hold the offer for me.

I won't quote an exact number here because prices change. It is my experience that they FALL over time (newer better gear becomes available and as clients vacate the older gear for newer, sale prices are given for gear left vacant). Our needs have not changed over time, NWN is a humble user of system resources so a fairly modest computer can host it. What we benefit from most with professional hosting is (for me) anonymity and the safety from trolls that that gives me, and BANDWIDTH these guys have redundant power and Internet connections that are robust far beyond what I could get here at my house. Think about how much lag you've experienced on this server - chances are it is nearly none. Lastly the major benefit is that the hardware is repaired same day, usually within an hour with parts that are conveniently on-hand. All that said - on the company web site I am presently seeing servers priced from $99, a 25% discount would get us to about $75, and the optional 50/500 deal would take that to about $25 a month. That's as close as I can estimate to what we'll get based on the information I have at hand. When I sit down to negotiate a new server deal with them, it is possible they'll have some nice hardware recently vacated that we could do an even better (lower priced) deal on, who knows? I'm a haggler from waaaay back.

That's good.

May be worth asking if it's viable to pay $500 for what you are on at the moment, and later if you needed/wanted to upgrade, would said $50/$500 deal carry over to the next server, resulting in the new server still maintaining that $50 off deal. (As well as any 25% off discounts or such)

Just to see how flexible things are.

Good News!
First off... i don't want to pay the rest of this myself but good eBay sales (and some RL friends that support my ideals of free gaming) mean that if needed (and i do mean NEEDED) i can get us the rest of the way to our marker. Let me ask this though... is the new setup needed? because 3 months for $45 in our current setup is a lot lower than 3 months at $75 and even with our low player-base i think we can manage a 45 setup almost Indefinitely. Plus the longer we wait the lower these guys will likley go.. we may one day get a new rig for free just because its cost efficient to do so for them! If you guys could raise another 50 it would make it a lot less painful on me however.

However as long as everyone else on that list is willing to pay there part we have hit the 500.

Once I have a paypal account where I can transfer money from an account to the paypal account without giving them the allowance to leech it from my account. (Security reasons etc) I will donate aswell, around 50-100 dollars maybe more, so if we can get the 500 now, I will take up the next few months XD.

I can't guarantee it though, things are threatening to slope deep down again at my side here...bureaucracy, incompetence and such may stretch my money thin until the paperwork is through.

Re: Step up! No Excuses!

Friends,
We are _almost_ there. Remember the $500 is in addition to the first hosting fee (it functions to pay off the hardware costs - the advantage to the hosting company is they don't have out of pocket expenses to deal with so they pass that on in the form of a $50 a month lower monthly fee.

As long as we land in the $600-700 range we'll have enough to get a new server AND gain the price reduction (on on the new server which will cost less than our current server).

The estimated (low end servers) cost about $100 per month, I get a 25% discount on that which takes the monthly to about $75. The $500 makes it so we get another discount of $50 off the monthly, so we'll end up with a server cost around $25 by the look of it all. THIS will be extremely easy to afford, and will keep us in good form for a long long time to come.

I want you ALL to know I really appreciate this and I think the whole server community (donors and non-donors alike) really appreciate it too. I can tell you all first hand that I know what a job it is coming up with the hosting fees (I did it for six years). The server would FOLD if not for you good people. Thank you. Building a server, operating one, dealing with all the demands associated with it (beyond just the money) is a difficult thing, nothing comes easy. It is an expression of caring like this that helps me carry on in what is otherwise a mostly thankless task. Bless you friends. We are almost there (the big goal - of getting new server AND maximize the price discount we qualify for in the future.)

IF we do not make the total amount ($500+first quarter), I will set aside all overage and we'll try for the new server next quarter. YOU HAVE ALREADY SCORED A SUCCESS in that you have achieved at least the cost of another quarters' hosting (and much more) - which (if we do not make the big goal) will give us a good starting point for the next attempt at doing so. KUDOS to you all!

As we move forward, please keep in mind the great advantages of this hosting system, bandwidth the likes of which no home system can duplicate, server repair in the event of failure in about an hour (parts are NEVER an issue, they are all ON HAND), and a machine that ONLY runs your favorite game : Neverwinter Nights.

Shoulder to the wheel friends, we need one more good PUSH!

Friends,
MANY MANY thanks to each of you who have donated. Your STELLAR effort is to be commended!

There are many more PLAYERS here too, and still 15 days (roughly) to go - so I have great confidence we'll make the goal. IF we miss plan A, then we go to plan B (and the new server waits another 90 days, giving us that much more time to generate the [very modest] difference).

You people have AMAZED me. Kudos to you all!

Crying or Very sad we forgot to take into account paypal fees grrr...

*sigh* i admit i am frustrated at this being needed in addition to the norm because i thought the 500 was just that.. However i would like to reiterate my earlier question... WHY do we need to upgrade? wouldn't it be cheaper to lower the rent on the server we already have? i would rather have the server fees be 15 per month than 25 or 35... every dollar counts...

Friend Shar,
All I can say is, this is the offer the company posts, on getting new server, can put the $500 on it to reduce monthly fee by $50. I don't set the rules, I just read and follow them.

The company wants us on the new server, that is the path to the lowest prices. It is getting harder and harder for them to stock parts for gear that is approaching 'obsolete' status in the hosting biz.

We still have a bit of time and a number of our 'regular donors' have not been heard from (yet).

I'll be posting a msg to all forum members asking all to visit the forum, the server and of course donate for our big server upgrade drive.
