Friends,
BARBARIANS are and oft overlooked class, highly capable but fringe characters in many campaigns, NWN does provide for basic BARBARIANS, but we just had to push the envelope, thus BARBARIANS here have a wealth of features not standard to NWN.

TRACKING - allows a BARBARIAN to identify the signs of passage of a specific creature(s), to invoke this feature, simply click on any 'tracks' you find (the amount of data revealed varies by the reader), or use your RUNESTONE LONG RANGE POWER target the ground and select TRACKING ABILITY.

SCAVENGE FOR FOOD - being able to obtain food while in the wilds can make a BARBARIAN PC very popular in the PARTY. BARBARIANS are excellent at tasks like fishing and hunting, but also can SCAVENGE FOR FOOD to invoke this feature, use your RUNESTONE LONG RANGE POWER target the ground and select SCAVENGE FOR FOOD.

STARTING CAMPFIRES WITHOUT GEAR - those soft civilized types have to have torches or lamp oil but not a BARBARIAN, they can start fires with just firewood (rubs sticks together)... any BARBARIAN can light a fire without the need of tools, just click on the unlit campfire and the menu option to light it will present itself.

FIRELESS CAMPSITES (EPIC) - high level BARBARIANS are able to create campsites that do not require a campfire. This can be helpful when one does not want to alert enemies of the presence of a campsite.

WILDERNESS SENSE - This feature is activated by use of your RUNESTONE LONG RANGE POWER target the ground and select WILDERNESS SENSE it yields an overview of the Area you are in, the types of creatures the PC sees signs of in the Area, and lists hidden trails too. When combined with the BARBARIANS' extreme movement rates, this can make BARBARIANS seem like they are everywhere at once!

Hey, all this stuff for the Barbarian sounds just great! Sort of like a Druid without all the creepy Wikkian mumbo-jumbo. Do Rangers have similar skills (natural to the Class)?

I still think a Course at Dohral University in 'Wilderness Survival' should be able to teach almost any PC many of these skills, providing he has a 'normal' to 'above normal' Intelligence. Most of these skills can be 'Learned' by any PC that devotes some study time to them.

I second Roger's idea. However I would add that PCs that learn those wilderness skills will never be as good at it as a Druid or Ranger. For example, maybe eventually the PC will learn to track, or fish, or even make campfires with rubbing sticks together. However, they would never be able to make camps without campfires, or fish as easily as wilderness classes, or have the wide range of other tracking options that proper wilderness classes have.

(or Barbarian) For example, maybe eventually the PC will learn to track, or fish, or even make campfires with rubbing sticks together. Wholeheartedly agree. I have no idea of what the (say) 'Tracking' skill of one of the Wilderness Classes would be, but a PC that takes a 'Wilderness Survival' Course would have a much better chance of succeeding at Skill [Whatever] than a PC that never took such a course, but never as good a chance of succeeding as a PC in one of the aforementioned classes. Lets say a Druid has a Tracking Skill that allows him a 90% chance to correctly identify what type of critter made the print, as well as which direction it was traveling. A PC that takes the 'Wilderness Survival' Course learns tracking, but he would never have better than a, let's say, 75% chance to make the same ID of the track. Which is much better than just getting the usual 'You see something has passed this way, but you have no idea what made the track'.

I've been arguing with GM_ODA for months that with even a modicum of intelligence, a human should be able to tell the difference between the track of another booted human or a [small, medium, large] cloven hoofed animal, or a horse's hoof, or a humanoid. The environment varies considerably, of course - a track through tall grass would be harder to ID (even for the experienced) than a nice, clear track on damp earth. To even an experienced tracker, that 'Canine' print could be a Wolf, a large dog, a Werewolf, or a Kobold. One of the Wilderness-types might be able to tell them apart, but the PC with just the class beneath his belt would be much less likely to do so.

A Druid might be able to spot a 'bunny trail' through the undergrowth 90% of the time, where a 'normal' PC 'might' spot it 10% of the time. Given 'learned' tracking skills, his skill might make it possible to find the 'bunny trail' through the woods 50% of the time. Much better, don't you agree??

All of the above would take much more scripting talent than I possess, but that's what GM_ODA is for, neh? Laughing

Friends,
I like that you have options - but a question. Would not just having the PC take a level as (for example) BARBARIAN, DRUID OR RANGER do exactly the same thing?

I'll pass on to Eriniel the non-tracker-classes having a chance to recognize form of track as noted in earlier post from Roger Dodger... but full on tracking might be best left to the CLASS choices made in building a PC. Tracking is another fine Eriniel custom system.
