Coordinating this nwn server with iscandar.ch - dialog
Hi! I'm Pascal from iscandar.ch
It seems that Iscandar wrongly marks your server as offline.
If your server is online, then it's probably the gamespy protocol at fault. If you could fix your hosts file with these lines, everything should go fine.
Sorry for annoying you folks.

Friend,
You are not annoying us at all. I have long been curious and maybe you can illuminate for me a question I have regarding this issue.
Eriniel has demonstrated a simple system that shows the status of our server which does not necessitate any change to the hosts file. So I wonder why your system requires a change to the hosts file? Until that mystery is sufficiently resolved, I'm not inclined to change the hosts file.
So, why exactly is this required when the data regarding status of a server can be acquired without such change?

I understand,
the explanation why these 2 lines are required is explained here: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
This helps your NWN server contacting a gamespy replacement server (since gamespy is dead now) and allows your server to correctly answer to iscandar.ch
Otherwise iscandar read "no answer" = "offline".

Friends,
The topic was recently introduced by forum Member pascalbrax who operates the service. The above posts are the messages related to that discussion (moved to a thread of their own as it is a matter we wish to consider and engage in dialog regarding).

Re: Coordinating this nwn server with iscandar.ch - dialog
Friends,
It has been a most pleasant couple of days here. Yesterday, forum member pascalbrax visited to discuss our server and iscandar.ch (which offers an excellent server status reporting tool). As some of you may know, security is our first concern here, even at the expense of a few features, and for that reason, we have been unwilling to make changes to the hosts file on the server as previously required to have the server show status on iscandar.ch.
Sadly, when gamespy closed, our server no longer showed up in the server lists there.
As noted, pascalbrax visited yesterday and I put him in touch with Eriniel because Eriniel had written a program that could pull up a nwn servers' information without requiring any changes to the hosts file. Eriniel (as always my favorite genius), kindly shared that code with pascalbrax who quickly realized the potential of the lore. Pascalbrax spent the rest of today hammering out a php based variation of this code (the original was likely C language iirc) that does the same thing. And now, to quote from the news section of the iscandar.ch web site:
The beauty of this is redundancy! Now, if iscandar does not locate a server by the primary method, it tries using Eriniel's method, and so now, Iscandar will have the most complete listing of NWN servers ANYWHERE.
Many thanks to Eriniel for sharing her code and insights!
Many thanks to Iscandar/pasacalbrax for all the fine work and dedicated assistance to the NWN community.
NWN lives on!
