Custom/different Animal companions.

Post  Absol 13 on Sun Feb 22, 2015 8:18 am

This is more for Rangers/Druids that come from diffrent lands. say Swamp druids/rangers, would make more sense for them to have a Swampy Animal companion, yes?snow lands-snowy companion, Underground druid(as rare as they are) With an undergroundy Animal?

Yes/No?

I thought 'custom companion' was already a soon-to-come thing on the server?

Friends,
As you may know, we build here with a goal of NOT requiring the PLAYER to download custom haks - we rely on the ubiquitous CEP to give us content beyond the standard NWN. Eriniel has been reviewing the nature of NWN and some standing requests for custom familiars, and custom animal companions. As I understand it, her evaluation is thus : in part due to the 'possession' capability of familiars, a custom hak would be required to implement these, BUT, because Animal Companions do not have that capability, we _can_ do custom Animal Companions without burdening the users with a custom hak.

Eriniel Abs and myself were discussing this earlier today and Eriniel mentioned these things, asking us to post a reminder. Twisted Evil So - watch for the new Animal Companion options sometime in the not too distant future.

NOTE that later, in our future modules (what I often call Dohral's "sister modules") we will require use of custom haks, but for this main module where the casual visitor might "get a taste of our work" we want to keep the "threshold of entry" as low as we can.

It might be an idea to make this a IG quest or the like- to get a custom companion, a druid/ranger needs to find said companion and complete a scripted ritual? (Or just wave a widgit at them Razz )

Trying to think about possible complications here, it might be difficult to account for all the possible companion builds. I suppose you could have it so all small canines used the wolf build, and large cats used the panther build and so on.

Currently the existing build templates are:
Badger (Con, fighter, rage, damage reduction, regen)
Boar (Strength, improved ferocity, toughness)
Brown bear (Strength, fighter)
Hawk (gen stats, sneaky: disarm, dodge, mobility, weapon finesse, weapon proficiency (creature), toughness (at level 20), epic toughness (at level 25))
Wolf (Dex, sneaky, Fear Howl)
Dire Wolf (Dex, fighter)
Panther (Dex, Sneaky, evasion, sneak attack, uncanny dodge, weapon finesse, weapon proficiency (creature))
Giant Spider (gen stats, sneaky, darkvision, weapon proficiency (creature), toughness (at level 20), epic toughness (at level 25), poison, web)
Dire Rat (Dex, sneaky, sneak attack (+1d6), weapon finesse, weapon proficiency (creature), toughness (at level 20), epic toughness (at level 25))

Brown bear could be used for any ursine companion/ strong large animals
Hawk for any avian companion?
Panther for sneaky large animals (Like similar big cats?)
Dire wolf for fast fighting large animals ( like hyena/tigers?)
Wolf for smaller sneaky animals/ canines?

I can't think of all of them right now.

But we don't have any snakes, for example- and how do we feel about magical beasts like griffons? (we have dire animals, but that's a little different).
While spider is given as an option, animal emp normally doesn't work on insects- how do we feel about more insect companions being added? Should spiders be a one off outlier for weirdo druids/rangers?

I think you can have a spider as a companion. I know shifters and maybe druid can morph into different ones.

I have seen druids use them as summons and more mage types use them as familairs.

You CAN have a spider as a companion(as Elgate pointed out) Her point was, Should we change it? It Kinda dont makes sense.

*Comes out from the dark corner of the room, a wicked smile on his face*

Spiders... Adorable companions! I love how they throw webs at my enemies, making them stuck while I'm free to kill them all with an volley of arrows! Hahahaha, or even! Watch them burn setting the webs on fire! Or, or, casting various spells that would kill them where they stand! Hahahahaa, the possibilities, THEY'RE INFINITE!

*a spider chitter*

Oh, of course dear, dinner's served, go ahead.

-- What do I mean with this is: spiders are awesome, don't critize my spiders. Also, they're fun to play with.

^ Found the weirdo druid/ranger Razz

And I don't think spiders need to/should be removed, only that I'm wondering what catergories we're thinking here.

Dire animals seem fine, but magical beasts seem risky for some reason. I'm not against magical beasts being potential companions, but for some reason the canon lore never suggests them, as far as I can remember- it suggests animals, including dire animals and dinosaurs, but never things like unicorns, griffons and so on. (I think this might be to do with older versions of the druid having to be true neutral, and while animals were neutral, magical beasts often weren't)

NwN offers a spider companion, but insects, while still important to druids, don't have similar enough minds for them to be able to animal emp (and as I understand, bond with. But hey, if drows can breed and tame intelligent spiders for all your needs, then why can't a druid bond with a particularly sentient spider?)

Should all druids start with the 'standard' companions and complete a quest to find a new companion? (In DnD, as you leveled up, you could either level your current companion, or pick a new one from an improved list. Higher level druids could get t-rex's as companions.) This would limit the list to 'naturally/locally available' animals. If people wanted exotic animals (because their druid/ranger is from foreign lands were such animals are native, for example) then they could make a request and a DM could spawn the animal for them to 'bond' with?

I'm not sure about 'grey' druids- I'll need to look them up.

(BTW, I focus on druids more than rangers because I know druids better. But I think the process is (or should be) the same for both).

I'm curious about that actually- with Horses being technically planar beings, what with the Cholla dragging them from somewhere else. How would a druid/ranger react to that? If horses can't reproduce without causing nightmares due to planar energies maligning or something along those lines(or so we're told >.> Should we trust the Cholla?), can a druid/ranger bond with them the same way? (If you think of a druids/rangers powers being based on the balance of nature and the energies of the planes)

I'll (hopefully) be able to pop in on Friday or Sunday.

I have Grace (21 druid), who's companion I never use so am not attached to, and a test druid character (level 8 druid) that I don't mind using as a guineapig.

More on topic, now that I'm done reading, I think this one thing nwn has always needed.

One thing I've always wanted was more Summon Monster choices. I had played a little on a server that had messed around with those.

For example:
Playing a Gnome summoned constructs
Spell Focus Necromancy summoned undead
Spell Focus Conjuration added second summon slot, GSF extended duration.
Purchasable book ig allowed to change to different summon "trees" , like celestial or Faerie, with several others unlockable under the right conditions (like those above)
