Increasing roleplay XP?

Post  Nightcaper on Sun Apr 12, 2015 12:01 am

Thought I'd throw a suggestion out there. I extensively RP, even to the point of walking... and I've noticed at the end of these, logging in the next day or the next time, even after RPing out an event, that often the experience I get totaled is the amount I'd get for killing one rat (I checked... it's pretty close). For the time I spend roleplaying out my character, with adventures that define his very person and make him even question himself and improve, the experience I gain from a lot of this is the reward for killing one rat. I also killed goblins, and while I didn't pay special attention, I could definitely tell it was somewhat on par with that as well. I've been noticing that with how the XP is currently given (this is factoring out the XP given from events, this is just the automatic XP system), it pays more to grind rats or goblins than it does to RP out a full day with interesting things happening.

What I suggest to combat this problem is tweaking the XP gained from automatic roleplaying. The low amount has pretty much brought me to the point of heading down in the sewers to hunt (dear god, I really didn't want to resort to that)... and then couldn't figure out how to get out of the sewers and promptly died, but that's another story. From measuring the amount of roleplay I do and comparing it with the roleplay XP I'm given after re-logging in... I'd say this number needs to be multiplied by some certain amount, perhaps even factor character level in to the algorithm to make sure it doesn't get too hectic. In this manner, it could be tweaked so that roleplay experience is effective for all levels, even the higher levels where it takes a lot of XP to get anywhere (you can tweak as you wish of course).

I just suggest this because it's irked me a bit to log in after a very eventful, interesting roleplay yesterday just to find I got 47 XP for roleplaying... well, it irked me after I got done laughing. I'm willing to elaborate anything if necessary, and give more information if needed... and if I don't have the information I will attempt to gather it. Thanks for reading! Very Happy

Welcome.

It has been suggested as well that players award other players for rp. The amount would be dependent on the players level, also would limited to how many times one can give it out.

The xp system in regards to creature kills is a work in progress. Also in regards to the rp xp you get on logging in depends more so on interaction with other players whether basic rp or in any event.

How about a XP reward for daily log ins? Could be like, "you've been playing for 1 hour, here's an exp for you", since people would really actually log in just to get the exp, then log out.

Thank you for welcoming me, and it's a pleasure to meet you, Animayhem! I'd like to thank you for reading my post and even replying to it! As for the variations of roleplay XP, I did take this possibility in to account while playing. Allow me to give the following 3 experiences in which I've measured:

  • First time: I just got off the boat, literally. I had some interesting roleplaying in the beginning, and almost every action I made was emote'd in. I'm a pretty faithful roleplayer, and I even found interaction with players along that route, which was really cool! They got me to the Noob U where I could get a grasp of the mechanics of the server. At some point, I had logged out. When I logged back in, my roleplay experience gained was 33 XP, or around 30. I thought that was pretty small, but I figured that I was in the Noob U for quite a while, so any roleplay I commenced there likely didn't count.

  • Second time: Along with regularly RPing my walks along the city and any events that occurred, there was a particular newbie event that was hosted, which was really intense and got me exploring the city. I roleplayed with all sorts of people there, and even got to tag along with another PC near the end of the event to foil an evil wizard. It was fairly eventful RP, and I made two new friends, very fun event! The event-granted experience was great and made sense with the event, and at some point I logged that day, probably until the next day. I got back on... and I received 44 XP in passive roleplay experience. I was scratching my head at this point, as I was in IC areas, even with people, roleplaying... but I figured I'd give it one more shot.

  • Third time: I have to say this was one of the more exciting moments of roleplay I've had. I had met Grimtooth, he had showed me how to get out of town to the wilder parts, which fits in with my character's nature orientation and general Monk needs. A lot of roleplay was done, met a wolf that accompanied us, and on a hunting trip for food for the wolf, we came across goblins that had killed the wildlife. It became a quest to dwindle the goblin's numbers, to nothing if possible. Much roleplay before, in-between, and after, healing was roleplayed, any KOs were roleplayed, it worked out very nicely. My Monk made two new friends, got a level of experience (those goblins were worth more XP than I'd have gotten from a real in-depth roleplay, sadly), and took a moment to meditate, heal his major wounds (they got really messed up), and try to write a journal entry for the journal here on the forums (having issues getting the next entry up). The day had to be one of the more eventful days I've had... and my roleplay XP? 77 XP.

I am in favor of at least reviewing the roleplay XP system and determining if it would be rewarding enough out of beta. I would not suggest something that I didn't think would really help the roleplay server, and I hope reviewing the system will be considered with the information I've given. I will continue gathering information on roleplay XP from my various experiences, but until then I'm sure there's some delicious XP goblins waiting in the bushes. Laughing

Thank you for reading and hearing me out!

Welcome from me as well!

Hmm, I'm not sure exactly how the general RP XP scripts work. To be honest, I've only ever gotten around 140 max, and that was after a long day of RP. I've never really relied on it for xp, and I know it's hard to script something like that to be able to tell OOC chat from IC chat, and what is good RP or not (For instance, can it check to see if what your emoting fits what you put in your immersion book, such as RPing *Cackles madly* gets more xp if your character is mad than if your character is sane). It might also penalise some players who prefer to use different styles of texting- most I know prefer to use double asterisks for actions and nothing for normal speech, but others I know use double speech/quotation marks for normal speech and nothing for actions.

You do get DM awarded XP for events, and occasionally on the spot rewards for when you impress DMs.

You also get XP depending on your class. Bard or another arcane magic user? Collecting books gets you xp. Sneaky thief class? Pick pockets! There are other things for other classes (some are in need of fixing, to prevent them being exploited, so I won't mention them here. Pickpocket is an iffy one as well, but should be good to use).

I think more DM/player awarded RP xp would be nice. Maybe more like a tally chart, to avoid some players favouring another player? For example, a character needs a 'vote' from at least 3 different players to get awarded xp. An old, now dead, server I played on had different 'cookies' awarded by DMs. You could get awarded different sizes of cookie depending on the importance of the event you were in, or how impressed the DM was with your RP. These cookies could be traded in for different amounts of XP or Gold, or saved up for other purposes (Want a special character or something similar? Save up cookies to prove/buy that character/thing.)

Friend Nightcaper,
Again it is a pleasure to have met you and I do want to say I have enjoyed your interactions on the server. Kudos on the RP.

MEGA big thanks for the feedback too. We need feedback to help refine the way things work here as well as to eliminate bugs. So please do report anything you find odd or broken.

We have tried to build a server that rewards behaviors we feel are conducive to good RP. Hence we do the traditional thing and award XP for kills, but also we offer XP for RP as this thread highlights, and we offer XP for travel. Soon, spell-casters will get XP for casting spells.

We are in the process of adjusting XP for kills, I think the XPs for kills are a bit high in general and I'd prefer a modest rate of level progression. I like to think this is not a race to level 40. Very Happy What I am targeting here is level 20 in about six RL months play, with levels 30 and 40 hitting at about six month intervals also, but YMMV is all too true; each PC takes a unique path and each PLAYER has a unique gaming schedule some with more some with less time to dedicate to the game.

It is a huge server and there is much to explore (you may have noticed also that exploring a new Area earns you XPs too... this module offers 1337+ Areas, with the typical Area awarding 20 XP there is literally 26,000+ XP just in travel XP.

But I ramble.... Regarding your observations of RP XP thus far:

Exactly so, RP in any OOC Area is not counted toward any RP XP earned.

Good narrative here, but one question, approximately how much time elapsed in RL during this login (I am curious roughly how many XP for RP are being earned with the automated system and you are among the better/more-verbose of the RPers I've seen (you use emotes a lot, which is good, in fact it was refreshing just to see someone jump in with both feet as you did). Your style of RP should be gaining you good XP automatically.

May I ask how long in total the session ran? Again, I'm trying to get a handle on how many XP are being earned over the time spent, without knowing how much time it took to earn the XP it is hard to gauge how worthwhile the exchange.

MANY THANKS for your feedback. I look forward to more details on your experience, more dialog in this and other threads as well as online. Good, bad, indifferent, all feedback helps us gain perspective on the work as a whole. Please keep it coming.

I'm so happy to see a lot of people replying, and even making suggestions of their own; These are all very valuable suggestions I feel! Very Happy

As for the times I've roleplayed up to, I fear I don't have exact measurements, though I know it's around some hours, 3-5+? I'll continue testing the roleplay XP gained and this time will measure time for better accuracy. Smile

I'd like to throw this out there: I will always value roleplay over XP. A big reason I bring this up is because although I do value roleplay over XP, I need XP and money in order to further progress throughout this really detailed world. To be able to run a guild, to be able to go further out and explore, to venture with other PCs to hunt things down... I will need levels and equipment/money. I try to wade this as much as I can, but I know that eventually I'll plateau to the point where I will need levels or equipment. Just wanted to make that clear, perhaps a side suggestion might be for ways for Monk classes to earn XP. Elgate gave me this idea by his mentioning of classes having special forms of getting XP, so maybe Monks might have a similar way (Meditation? All experience gained gets a 5-10% boost?), but perhaps that's for another suggestion thread.

I want to thank everyone for chiming in and even welcoming me. I'm glad to see such an open community. For now I'll do time testing of roleplay XP given various circumstances, and I hope to see all of you at some point in the server! Cool

So I've got a small update. On my rogue I did some self roleplay from 4:23 PM to 5:15 PM... almost an hour but not quite. Nobody was on, it was just me self roleplaying and then went to do some stuff in the Noob U. Not very substantial roleplay by any means, but thought that any information is good information. For the minuscule roleplay I got 26 XP, kinda expected it. I did some more substantial roleplay with Absol today, I'll post those results soon enough, right now I'm a bit worn out and doing some studying. Smile

Friend Nightcaper,
Thank you as always for the input.

Note please, when you first enter any area, a short text in most cases that declares some information about the scene you have entered. In cases where this is an OOC area, such as Noob U is, this is indicated. OOC areas do not qualify for RP xp. For best results (most useful data) try to track some sessions where you do not enter OOC spaces.

Wednesday, April 15th, I logged in to the server.

I believe the time was around 2:30 PM, where I encountered Saber and Mialee. I ended up doing some interesting roleplay, mostly with Saber, showing me how to get to Tivook, talking to me, some character development. The roleplay was passive, stayed in IC areas, and was a fun bit of talking and character development. I stopped at 3:59 PM, the roleplay XP I gained was 68 XP.

With my characters for about an hours worth of Rp with aira (lvl 36) I get about 400-500 I -think- this is connected to lvlv, but I still suggest that we boost The RP XP you get to make it more viable to RP.
