I'm a long way away from being able to contribute builds, but I'm setting up shop, so to speak, and have a question.

I'm running a Windows platform, so is the Windows NWN server adequate for basic or even intermediate testing, or would I be better off setting up a Hyper-V virtual Linux system running the NWN Linux server?

Opinions?

Friend Cadarnfel,
Windows works OK for all NWN uses, but it is not the better server system (like if you were hosting a module, I'd recommend you do it with linux - security and speed suffer under windows). For playing, building, even local testing, windows will do fine. Good question btw.

I strongly recommend most users make their computer a 'dual boot' system just in case windows fails. A dual boot system in this case can boot windows, OR boot linux on the same machine (uses a partition on the hard drive). Because linux can read windows file formats (strangely the opposite is not true), if the windows install should fail, you can boot linux and examine sometimes even repair the windows install, and at the least, salvage your files.

Thanks for that.

As far as dual booting goes, and having used OS/2, various distributions of Linux and BSD, OSX, as well as Windows, I'm comfortable with my security and backup processes. Very Happy

Granted, Windows has its share of issues, but these days, they're not as bad as they used to be.
