What happens to my Bow? Empty What happens to my Bow?

Post  Roger_Dodger Sun May 17, 2015 7:09 pm

Why do I keep losing my bow between games? This has happened twice now - the first time I had a +1 Short bow, when I re-logged in the next day, it was missing from my inventory. I had to look all over town, but finally found a long bow in one of the stores. I bought it, and even used it a few times (practice at Noob U.). I'm getting pretty good with it, thank you very much. I picked up a Bard-type Henchman, and we went exploring outside the City Walls for awhile. Came back to town, stayed at an Inn, then I released him (asking him to stay until I got back), then logged off (saving my character first). Today I came back (to the Inn), my Bard was there waiting for me, but my longbow is missing. I can pick up another short bow at Noob U., but I'd rather have my long bow.

What happens to my bows???? (there was no server re-set)

Curious minds want to know,

What happens to my Bow? Empty Re: What happens to my Bow?

That is unusual. I'm actually not sure what's going on here, hmm.

A few things can cause an item to *Poof!*, but that doesn't sound like what's happening here.

Sometimes an item is tied to a certain area (The bag of ore holding in the college rooms, for instance), and should only be used in that area. If you take it and leave the  area, when that area eventually resets the item will just disappear from your inventory. (Areas will reset themselves if no player has been in them for a long time, and has had no player logging off in them.)

Other times it might be wild magic 'eating' your equipped items (usually armour), as a random effect.

Items will also suffer wear and tear and might break. Not sure how it is with bows, but with blades you end up with 'shattered remains' in your inventory somewhere, and you can get it reforged.

There's also the risk of pick pockets- have you had anyone 'attempting to steal from you'?

But I don't know of any bows that would be tied to an area, and it sounds like it's poofing while you're offline, so it won't be wild magic or wear and tear, or pickpockets.

Just to make sure, you didn't give the item to the henchman, did you? This shouldn't be a problem in your case, but be wary about giving henchmen items- occasionally they'll run off with them (also, when they eventually reset or the entire servers reset, their inventory will be set back to default.)

The time between logs is roughly about a day each time? That might be enough time for 'little resets' (Areas resetting, for example), but I'm not sure that's whats causing your bows to disappear. A DM would be happy to give you another one (and you can get plain longbows from one of the chests in NoobU I think...), but this isn't something I've seen before.

Have you noticed anything else missing, or any strange messages popping up?

Friends,
There is one other possibility that I know of and that is 'too much inventory' if you have your inventory filled up, you will loose items on log due to a NWN issue. When your PC logs out it actually (unseen) unequips all gear dropping it into inventory. If there is no room in inventory, the item is lost.

Does this or any of Elgates' ideas seem to fit? I'm curious to get to the source.

Lots of interesting questions and ideas, so I'll answer in boldface within the quotes

Elgate wrote:That is unusual. I'm actually not sure what's going on here, hmm.

Lets call it a 'mystery'. Smile

Sometimes an item is tied to a certain area

Both bows were purchased from a store/merchant. The +1 Short Bow came from the store (I think) in the Port - like the 'Black Market' of Dohral. DM_ODA showed it to me on my original tour. I had it for several days, but can't honestly say 'when' it disappeared. I had not left 'town', and that I am sure of. The long bow was purchased from one of the two stores that are back-to-back in the main area of town. Unless stores/merchants are considered 'certain area's then this is not the case

Other times it might be wild magic 'eating' your equipped items (usually armour), as a random effect.

Again, this happened in town, where there shouldn't be any 'wild magic'. Rust Monsters can be quite hard on equipment, but a bow is made of wood, and I haven't seen any Rust Monsters (yet). Rolling Eyes

Items will also suffer wear and tear and might break. Not sure how it is with bows, but with blades you end up with 'shattered remains' in your inventory somewhere, and you can get it reforged.

I hadn't used either bow enough to suffer wear and tear (used both bows in Noob U. for practice, and went 'hunting' with the +1 bow, but never saw anything to shoot at. The Long Bow was just a Long Bow - not fancy, and no +s. You get what you pay for', but neither bow broke - they just disappeared.

There's also the risk of pick pockets- have you had anyone 'attempting to steal from you'?

YEAH! I've been meaning to discuss the 'Wandering Monk' and the 'Wandering Priest' running around the main part of town. They are very obvious (and aggressive) pickpockets, and have chased (and my henchman) me all over town. The 'Monk' 'may' have gotten the +1 bow, but I don't think so. I'm sure both disappeared between logs when I was in an Inn or other safe spot.

But I don't know of any bows that would be tied to an area, and it sounds like it's poofing while you're offline, so it won't be wild magic or wear and tear, or pickpockets.

Just so Surprised

Just to make sure, you didn't give the item to the henchman, did you?

No, he has his own crossbow, which I told him to use rather than the Dagger (his only other weapon).

The time between logs is roughly about a day each time? Yes That might be enough time for 'little resets' (Areas resetting, for example), but I'm not sure that's whats causing your bows to disappear. A DM would be happy to give you another one (and you can get plain longbows from one of the chests in NoobU I think...), but this isn't something I've seen before.

I'll check out Noob U. for a replacement. I only remember there being Short Bows available in the chest, but that may be because I wasn't 'authorized' to use a long bow at the time, so I didn't take one. Sure would save a lot of time over looking through all the display cases in the several stores. I've made an offer in the 'Construction' forum - have you seen it yet?

Have you noticed anything else missing, or any strange messages popping up?

I missed some stuff when the 'Wandering Monk' first pickpocketed me, but he got nothing especially valuable - just a bucketful of BAD KARMA. Evil or Very Mad I keep both text boxes stretched up, so I don't miss much. Nothing noticeable, especially when I re-log in whilst in an Inn.

NPC Pickpockets are tenacious- you can stop them by 'talking to them'. What this actually does is interrupt the action, but you can rp it as by talking talking to them, they know they've been spotted and give up.  Sadly, once an items been pickpocketed by an NPC it's gone. If it was a special item, you could try asking a DM to let you recover it (and they'd remake/regive you the item), but the pickpockets won't have the item in their inventory.

PC pickpockets are another matter. Be careful around those sneaky types  Razz

ODA's suggestion of full inventory might be the reason (and would also explain why my inventory occasionally seems to reorganise itself between logs >.> I guess it's having to move items around to make space for my equipped gear.)

And yes, there are rust monsters about Razz

'Too much Inventory' isn't an issue anymore since I found the method of consolidating the Rune Stones to Potions, then 'storing' the Potions in the Vitality Pack (I have 4 Potions stored). I have two completely empty inventory 'screens', and a couple of others with just a few items (like my food and water are all on one 'screen'.

None of Elgates ideas seem to fit (see above), although all the questions were good at trying to narrow things down. I toyed with the idea that the server itself 'felt' that I wasn't high enough level to 'deserve' these items, but really, we're not talking about Mr. Finch's 'machine' here. Very Happy For now, let's just call it a 'Mystery'. I'll get another bow, and see what happens

Color me 'confused',

'Talking to him' was how this whole vendetta started. It just seemed to 'encourage' him to do his pickpocketing thing. He ripped me off for several 'unimportant' items (which I noticed right away). When I objected by taking a swing at him with my sword, he proceeded to beat me up. I ran away, all the way to the gate guard, but he just stood by and watched the Monk trash me (some 'defender'  Sad  ). Anyway, since then the Monk called his Pal, the 'Wandering Priest', and now they are both just laying in wait for me. Its a VENDETTA I tell ye.  Mad

PC pickpockets are another matter. Be careful around those sneaky types  Razz

I haven't seen any Rogue PCs as yet. Personally, I never pickpocket other PCs - that's not a 'good' thing to do. I used to have 'problems' in PnP games running with 'Evil' type PCs. I finally had to 'trash' him before he would let me alone.  Twisted Evil

ODA's suggestion of full inventory might be the reason (and would also explain why my inventory occasionally seems to reorganise itself between logs >.> I guess it's having to move items around to make space for my equipped gear.)

No, that's not the problem (see above). My major beef with inventory is in its weight. Not much room left for treasure.

And yes, there are rust monsters about Razz That figgers   Very Happy

Have a good day!

Taking screens refers to 'taking screen shots' or 'print screening'. Usually, NwN can tell when you've screen shot/ print screened, and in your nwn folder you can find a folder called 'screen shots' usually saved as a TGA file, but you can also just open up paint and 'paste' the most recently taken screen shot.

Chat logs are a bit trickier. It's possible to record everything that is said when you're in NwN. So all the text you can see in your 'action box' (where attacks are shown, for example) and  chat box (chat, tells, shouts, so on..) can be saved as a notepad file.

To set this up, go into you nwn folder and find a file called  'Nwnplayer.ini' and open it up in notepad. Look to see if there is a  "ClientChatLogging" (This records chat box only) or "ClientEntireChatWindowLogging" (this records chat log and combat/action log). If these are set to "=0" change it to 1.  If you can't see either command, add it in under the 'Game options' column (its the first one for me, and I have "ClientEntireChatWindowLogging" between "Hide secondstorytiles" and"Logmyemoteusage").

This will save a new log every time you log off and start a new one every time you log in (overiding the old one, so if something important happens, rename the chatlog file so it won't be over written).

To find the logs, go to your NWN folder, 'Logs' folder and look for 'nwclientlog1'.
