How do you research?

Post  BenevolentDevil on Fri Sep 07, 2018 11:57 am

How does one specifically research items, to find out how to make/craft them?
So far, I've not seen a way to "reverse engineer" anything ...

When I use libraries, I'm getting books for Collage classes , not research material specifically ... or even clues/hints how to start.

I know part of it relies on thinking and common sense ... how I figured out to make empty-bottles, and glass shirkens , and quarts crystals ( though I wonder what use those have.) Basically sand+heat makes "glass" .

But when looking at items that might be chemical based , and not seeing any places ... so far that deal specifically in alchemy , and not exactly finding the right source material in libraries ... kinda stumped a bit on my end.

Friend Benevolent Devil,

Has your PC completed all four college courses (e.g. become a full fledged licensed crafter in Dohral)?

Once you have done so, a door that is 'graduate students only' will unlock for you, and you will have access to more tools to further your research.

Most crafting gear is available to those PCs who have taken 'Player Owned Housing' through our Guildworld Merchant, so you can even have your own private laboratory.

No, I've actually not taken any courses yet.
It says on the registar you need 20 points in one of your crafting skills ... maybe I miss read that, but I've honestly hadn't had any points to spare to put towards crafting , just to take classes.

I don't know 100% , hadn't logged back in to check yet, but IF classes require a 20 point drop into "nwn crafting skills" , thats ... not really great having that as a requirement.
That requires highe rlevels, unless you specifically focus on specific characters to craft early on, dumping as many points from level one into the NWN craft skills.

So far, I know you need "spot" skills , possibly "search" ... MOST classes are going to be skill point "starved" as it is.

Perhaps a compromise, would be say to have some "spendable" secondary skill points , that are based off the PW scripted skill for extras outside of the generic "combat" mechanics? From 2nd edition, proficients didn't "cover" everything under a general blanket ... you could use secondary skills systems , to further flesh out characters.
But I'm not a scripter/coder, so I don't know if that would work or even be feasible.

Friend Benevolent Devil,

I'll review the text about that for clarity.

You need to attend five classes in any type of study (such as Herbology or Enchanting), each class you take gives you four points in that 'skill', total of 20 pts must be earned in each of the studies to earn a "crafters license" in the city of Dohral.

Having the skills (crafting skills) helps but are not needed.

oooh ... so , ok, I did mis read it then.

But ... taking five classes EACH course instead?
( and specifically, what do I need to do the alchemicals? Herbology or Enchanting? )

Is the license required?

Hahaha... Fei would be ok with that , due to she's Lawful and disclipined , but Natasha ... hehehe, imagine going up to Conan and telling him, he's got to have a license to do anything... hahahaha!

I was mistaken on which part I seen the NWN crafting requirements - ( I've done all the classes available)

Trying to get a license

You need the license to get basically the "good research" libraries ... which requires a combined skill of 20 points spent on craft-weapon and craft armor skills if I read the above correctly.

and just trying the enchant table lol ... , the math is a bit off for "success"  DC of 32 rolled enough to equal 32 , still failed.
Rolled equal to DC, still failed.

Friend Benevolent Devil,

Most interesting... I will review the scripts and discuss the incident with Eriniel when next I see her (in the next couple days I'm sure). I may have been functioning on insufficient caffeine. *sage nod* Sleep
