Death attack
I just started playing an assassin and I never did before so I didn't start thinking there was something odd until just recently. Anyhow.. When I backstab someone and get the "death attack" thing, I very very rarely see a save rolled... :/
I was thinking that maybe I just see it when I succeed and have tried it too little to be sure yet. I did succeed once so far and the dc was 16 but the blow killed the opponent so I couldn't explore it further. That was on the third death attack in a row on the same guy who had a fortitude save of 4, I believe. Anyway, I hope you look into it because assassins are fun

Re: Death attack
After some more testing it seems only every other death attack gets a saving throw... Most simply don't happen though... :/

Re: Death attack
To shed a little insight on this.. Assassin Death Attack DC is based on INT Mod + Half Assassin levels..
You can only get a death attack on flat-footed characters (which generally means someone who is not in combat..) and I do not believe you'll get a check on paralyze immune creatures.
They are quite fun, however.. they have a few special needs here and there that can make them cumbersome to play and they do not have a whole lot of synergy with a lot of other classes.. though, that's up to opinion, I suppose.

Re: Death attack
Do you mean that it can still say Death Attack above the PC head when an opponent is not flat-footed? Been testing it more. Seems like I still would not get a check on at least half the attacks but its much better than I had first anticipated at least. As for classes, I basically stole the dark-stalker epic character build from the nwn page but personalized it a bit by switching out ranger for bard, because it suits the character a lot better.
Also there's a base dc of 10 to the death attack, so 10 + half assassin level + Int mod.

Oki... I guess it works most of the times.. I've found little reason to complain about the death attack lately.

Re: Death attack
Yeah, sorry for the lack of responses here. I had actually never played an Assassin.. though heard quite a deal about it.
So, yes.. I forgot to include the +10.. but it's very very very common for most ever DC based attack to have a +10 to start. As for how many death attacks you get.. I'm pretty sure as long as they remain out of combat that you'll get them. Using something like attack + invis (ring?) + attack should keep you getting extra chances (as far as tactics go).. unless they have see invis but, darkness will get you sneak attacks unless they have ultravision (I think O.o.. I'm so rusty at remembering this stuff lol)..
Have fun with it

Re: Death attack
It's actually not half the assassin level but full assassin level. So its quite possible to get 10+30 in base dc without adding your int modifier to it.
One annoying thing about darkness is that Darkvision doesn't help you in the least. Assassins have the darkness spell I think and they get darkvision, it would then seem natural that the intention was for them to use this as a kind of trick up their sleeve, but they still miss 50% of their attacks. :/

Re: Death attack
Just to clarify, Darkvision does nothing to help you see in magical darkness. It's only for the "regular/natural" darkness in caves, underdark, etc., etc...
The only other things that would help in magical darkness are blindfight (which lets you re-roll every missed attack in magical darkness) and Ultravision, which gets rid of the blindness and the minuses to attack rolls. To be able to be completely unaffected by magical darkness you would have to either have cast the spell or have ultravision and true seeing cast on you.'
As for Death attack, here, straight from the nwn wiki.
"Death attacks are made whenever an assassin would qualify for a sneak attack, regardless of the target's combat state. (If an assassin also has a sneak attack, the game only reports "sneak attack" to the player.) In particular, death attacks can be made with ranged weapons if within 30 feet of the target.
* All death attacks deal bonus damage, but not all death attacks trigger a paralysis save.
A death attack only triggers a paralysis save if the target is not engaged in combat, as per this feat's description.
* As all attacks in a flurry are effectively simultaneous, there will be a saving throw for each attack in the opening flurry of combat."
[edit] oops... Just re-read the post and realized you said the same thing as I had. I thought it said the darkvision helps. Bleh... Anyways I'll keep this here for anyone who didn't know and happened to read the thread XD
