New Respawn rules

Post  Vaxel on Wed Oct 27, 2010 6:55 am

I don't like how when someone gets killed somehow, weather its via pvp, or monster (at an event or something). How they can just come back 5 secound later, to try again. I've seen some people in pvp who, once they get killed, respawn, buff etc and have a secound go at the person who just killed them. I was thinking perhaps the person who dies and comes back via a respawn gets something like anamiesia? (not sure if I spelt that right) Or something. Where as if they get resurrected, by another player, they are fine, though have had a horrific experience through death after being pulled back out (which could be added to the respawner too) of the spiritual realm or something. That way, they cant just suddenly jump back onto they feet and start attacking again, making things seem a bit more realistic. What do you guys think? Got any better ideas to take it further? Neutral
**EDIT**
Also came up with the idea of some symptoms like shaking, paranoia, twitching, perhaps some debuffs to begin with for a few minutes if you respawn?

I personally don't think that any of those side effects are necessary, though I do see where you are coming from. It needs to be made VERY clear to everyone who plays on this server that it is a ROLE-PLAYING server, and not just an action server. As such, role playing replaces the need for actual debuffs when respawning. I will explain.

In terms of PVP, you are right that a player should not simply use respawning as a method to rebuff or restore their health and return to pick up the fight. It should be COMMON SENSE to someone on a Role Playing server, especially one geared around fantastic realism, that if you die, you need to ROLE PLAY your return. Things to consider: Your PC, after dying, has no idea where their opponent is or what their status is. Your PC also just got beaten in a fight, which means that your opponent was superior in some way. The natural course of thinking in this situation is that in order to have your revenge, you will either need to become stronger yourself, or outsmart your opponent the next time there is a confrontation. Using respawn as a free heal and returning to finish off an injured opponent right where you left off is META GAMING and it should be made clear (By both PC's and DM's) that any player who does this is breaking the rules. I can't stress enough how important it is that this is a RP-Centric server, meaning if you don't plan to role play situations in a logical and IC manner, you should not be playing on this server. If someone does this to you, you should inform a DM, and if there are no DM's online then make a note of when/where it happened and let a DM know either over the forums or in-game at a later time. Actions such as the ones you described tell me that the player in question either A) Took a situation personally and broke the rules for the sake of revenge, or B) Is new or inexperienced to the idea of a Role Playing server, and thus they need to be set straight.

Now when it comes to PVE, or PVM (Player Vs Environment, Player Vs Monster) I do not feel as strongly about these rules. What happens within an event is up to the DM, if they see fit to revive a dead player then that is their perogative. At some point you have to realize that we are all playing this game to have FUN and it is obviously no fun if you happen to get into an event that may be a bit above your level or skill and you die and miss out on a fun adventure. If the DM is a hardliner they will let the player respawn and work their own way back into the event, otherwise they will find some kind of logical way to bring them back.

Then you have just a straight-up dungeon crawl, which can be done either by yourself or with a party. There's a good chance that if you're by yourself then there is no one on to play with, thus little place for RP. I understand the server gives fixed RP awards based on your text, but let's be honest, RP'ing alone can not compare to RPing with other players. Thus if you die on your own, the only one affected by your actions afterwards are yourself. The reasons for dying on one's own are numerous, but there are plenty that are (for the most part) out of the player's hands. As such, it really doesn't make sense to punish them -further- in such an instance, as the unexpected death and loss of a soulrune is already a consequence for the given situation.

PVM With a friend or friends is a little trickier, but it is not the same as PVP. Yes you go into a dungeon knowing that you may die, but if you are killed by a beast and cannot be resurrected, you already lose a soulrune, xp (that is gained while you are respawning and returning to the area), and any loot that may drop. On top of that, it is easier to find common sense IC motivation for returning to the site of your death; That is, not abandoning your friends. In such a case I feel as though it is not out of bounds to come up with some divine reason or situation in which you found yourself renewed with the gift of life because "your time had not come yet", or "your heart would not abandon your friends". Again I will add that at the end of the day we are all here to have FUN, and respawning to return to your party does not hurt anyone.

I hope I was clear enough with the explanation. The fact of the matter is, if you know how to role play, these distinctions should be common sense. If not, then someone needs to explain things to you otherwise you will find yourself breaking the rules of the server, i.e. Metagaming and acting OOC in IC situations.

Yes, but what I'm saying is, that should someone who doesn't know of the RP then, there should be a sign saying READ ME which talks about this. So that they can teach themselves and think of a reason how they came back to life. Because currentally there is no such thing anywhere I believe, and to leave someone to rely on common sence does not apply to everyone I'm afraid.

What Ada is trying to say, is that respawning is situational dependent. If you're wandering along in a cave and get owned by a bat, I wouldn't fault you if you respawned and ran right back there to continue. As it turns out, when you're level 4, and exploring, there's no warnings that those wererats will absolutely rip you apart one on one. Even around level 10 or so, which is halfway to epic levels, trolls can floor a decent PC in two or three hits. The ooze elementals in the sewers, mostly populated by nice, easy to kill, low level rats, are a decent match for Kross, who's level 14 with nice equips at the moment. So I don't blame you if you burn through soul runes that way, we all had to start somewhere, especially those quadratic casters.

When you're fighting monsters as a party, and no one can raise you, go ahead and respawn. Trust me, it's a lot better than laying there dead for a few in game hours while your friends try to find someone who can raise the dead. It's about having fun, and staring at the death menu for 45 minutes is not fun, even a little.

Now, when you're part of a DM event, or you die by PvP, there's the time you want to be conservative. Lay there and wait to see if anyone has any actions for your dead body. Respawn after everyone else leaves the area and things quiet down, it shouldn't take too long. Maybe someone wants a lock of your hair, or the DM wants to make a quest out of getting you on your feet again, or maybe the DM will raise you to talk with a god who demands a boon for giving you life again.
And this is just me, but unless you're playing a frothy mouthed berserker, if I beat you in PvP, and you respawn and run right back and start hammering on me again, I'd have no problem letting the entire server hear about what a terrible RPer you've been. Complete with screenshots. What happens to you after that is out of my hands, but I'd be secretly hoping for a nice, long banning. Because you'd deserve it with that kind of antics on this kind of server.

Now, if you don't know any better, that's different. A sign would be nice explaining that kind of stuff, and to use your best judgment. Also to defer to any DMs word if an event is going on.
