Could not use the magic carpet in city even though I showed 5021 mu's or 5,000 gold.

Was the gold in you inventory or in your money pouch? It needs to be in the pouch to be accepted by carpet. Try consolidating your coins or if that does not work drop them on the ground, pick them up and then consolidate.
