Greater sanctuary prevents any hostile action taken towards the, by the spell, protected creature. This means that you can not target the creature with attack or any other hostile action, including dispels like mordenkainen or other targeted spells. You can however target the ground with area of effect spells and they will hit the creature. The spell will also end if the creature protected by the spell takes hostile action. When a dm controls an npc however, and sends them to attack a creature protected by the spell, the npc will attack them even though it shouldn't be possible. So I urge any dm reading this to doublecheck a pc for the spell before sending npc's to attack them or come to an agreement that a pc using the spell also says "GS" or similar when they use it so that it can't be mistaken or overlooked as easily. Bear in mind that when your npc's suddenly stop attacking, it doesn't have to be a bug or delay in action that needs be overridden by sending the npc's to attack, but it may be the pc casting a protective spell like GS or invisibility.

The spell-effect of GS is the same as that of epic mage armor, tiny blue dots circling the caster.

In DnD I believe that casting an aoe spell targetting the ground would be considered a hostile action towards a creature protected by GS if the intention of the caster of said aoe spell is to hit the GS'd creature. I can't be sure though, but its food for thought. Smile

If you're not sure.. or for anyone reading.. The reason it does not fully work (GS, that is) is because you must have the character(s) hostiled before using GS for it to work 'against them'.

Otherwise, you just look like you're casting a spell and nothing is happening to players that are 'friendly'.

This is the same with hostile NPCs and (obviously) an NPC possessed by a DM.. in which the NPC would most likely be spawned hostile but DMs are always(?) friendly with the player.

As a suggestion, I did play on a server that changed most if not all of their graphics to reflect different colors per alignment and some reworked animations in total.. like Mage Armor actually showing and some other spells (See Invis/True Seeing/Ultravision) to be reworked so players could readily see which it was without seeing the same graphic for all three or no graphic at all.

It did not seem to be graphic intensive.. but may be food for thought.

Alot of times I've used GS as some huge monster is attacking me and it stops attacking me due to GS, so the dm sees it and supposedly thinks the creature must have glitched or something, so they order it to attack and it does...

It's too bad epic mage armor and gs has the same graphics, because my sorceress always has epic mage armor on, pretty much so it's never obvious when I cast gs.
