Reverse destillation

I would recommend a process that enables a player character to find out ingredients to a potion by doing some kind of reverse destillation of it.
Basically I imagine it like this.

Someone starts the process by sacrificing one or more of the potions.
A script alerts a online DM that the process has been started
A DM can make a roll based on the Int or crafting skills or alchemy skills of the Character
If successful the player character get's told a component of the potion that can be found in a smaller or bigger list of ingredients that can be used for alchemy, so he still has to experiment.
The more potions, higher the skill, stat etc, the more the ingredients can be narrowed down or the more components can be found as in.
Like "Mineral A in ingredients ABCDEFG and Fluid B in HIJKLMNOP and Mineral X in QRSTUVW"

its sort of what I have been rping for awhile now LOL.........trying to figure out the components of a certain item

Yeah, but I am meaning it only for Potions exclusively.

This sounds like the system they use in TES.
