Playing a Gnome cleric

Hello,

I'm brand new to Argentum Regio. I saw in the wiki that I should ask a DM before creating a gnome PC. I would like to play a gnome cleric, thinking of domains like Trickery and Earth. I don't know about gnomes within this game world, or gnomish gods. Do I need to get approval and/or do some background research before creating this character?

Any information would be appreciated.
