nwn hates my comp

So despite my best efforts, nwn will not install properly on this new pos.

Ive used the methods suggested by ODA and other forums to get it to run, but it still has a compatibility issue.

Ive set up before installing. ive interrupted the install to make sure the settings were correct and restarted. I have even hoped it would be as simple as changing settings after the install. Everything suggested, ive tried. Frustrating.

Any other suggestions would be welcome.
Im running win 8.1 on an HP pavilion 20, whatever that is. Any other details are beyond me and I cannot give, im not that tech savvy.

It can be done but is a pain. Try compat with win 7 or just roll back to win 7. Wind 7 you need to run as admin

I hate to be a caveman and all, but that was a foreign language to me. I don't know if this machine can even do that.

hheh in compatibilty tab it gives you options to run nwn

While still in Properties, select the "compatibility" tab. Select the box to run in Compatibility Mode, and then run as XP SP3. Oh, yeah, you also have to rename the nwnmain.exe file to something different like dorhalmain.exe Oh do not run as admin

i have windows 7 as well, you need to run it on a lower compatability setting yes, also, you do need to run it as admin, or it will not load up, also remember to update it before you try and play it, I was foolish enough to skip hat step accidentally and couldn;t play it for 4 years XD

and that's it. I have exhausted my last option, and whats left of my patience. this comp wont run it. I even sat on the phone with a Microsoft technician for 3 hours trying to figure it out. frustrating.

so, I am gonna break out and old crappy laptop and install on that. its literally my last option at the moment. if that doesn't work, unfortunately, I believe it will be the end of my nwn career. ill keep you all posted. until then, be well and have fun.

Did you install the 1.69 update again? I saved it on an external drive and just loaded it again.

ok, laptop has win 7 home premium and yes, I have the 1.69 update. I am also running it as admin and am still having compatibility issues.

NWN was built before windows Vista, so all operating systems from microsoft since XP, to run NWN must :

INSTALL THE GAME AS ADMINISTRATOR

RUN THE GAME AS ADMINISTRATOR

RUN THE GAME IN XP MODE SP3

...

Best practices, force CPU usage to one core (via setting in the ini files).

I'd be happy to walk you thru the whole process start to finish.

If you describe the trouble you are having with the laptop, I will help you troubleshoot it too. I _know_ we can make this work on either system (and I'm not surprised microsoft techs could not do it - it is technical, lol).

Thats not totally true... i have found that if you back up the full game to a external HDD you can simply copy & paste from pc to pc with no problems even when the os is different just as long as xp was the one that the disks were used on.. i know this isn't really that helpful in this case, but its how i did it..

BREAKING NEWS! I may just be an idiot. seems neither of my comps actually had update 169. so im gonna try and restart the process tomorrow. wish me luck.! Hopefully, if im lucky, im just stupid.

The INSTALL routines for nwn configure the installation to suit the hardware it is on. While you may experience some success in copying the old installation and using it in some other drive or computer there are perils in doing so if the hardware on the later use rig is not the same as that of the original install machine. Thus it is better to use the install mechanism to ensure that the right sort of files end up where they belong. DirectX files are also essential to NWN and many of them do not exist on more modern versions of windows (it is always best to give NWN the DirectX SDK v9c no matter what version of windows you are running and no matter what version of DirectX it has on it).

In this particular case, it is a NEW COMPUTER, the old computer is dead and the user does not have the option of doing a copy/paste operation.

Tell me when you have time/day available and I'll do my best to be available to walk you thru the process friend tApp.

might want to try poking around here too or posting... http://social.bioware.com/forum/1/category/187/index I know I saw one post mentioned for windows 8 and the person was able to get it to run but I haven't tried it at all....


don't forget to post under the dohral thread before you leave to let everyone know about the server too...? ^^;

I don't know if it was ever solved but i know that ATI GPU's tend to be less compatible with NWN than Nvidia GPU's. I have only ever used ATI stuff at one point and they are not bad graphically don't get me wrong. but architecturally they are known to be less compatible, especially with legacy software.

at least this is in my experience as well as those i know personally.
