Custom Portrait Pak

I was wondering if it would be possible to have one for here. Maybe limiting the number per player to three ( ie three characters even if they have more)

Or allowing requests to be made for other characters but maybe only doing an in game update once every six months or once a year.

I have had extensive experience with not only editing artwork but also creating in game portraits.

I could put each pak in one file for oda and eri  to access.

Thoughts?

First Thoughts:

1) Would our use of such a portrait hak mean that all PLAYERS & DMS must download and have this hak to play on our server? If so, I would decline use of it as it means one more impediment for NEW PLAYERS to enter; for my way of thinking having CEP is impediment enough.

2) IF such a hak is used, there must be full respect for IP Rights - any and all images would have to include permission from the author/artist - anything else would be a legal problem and I would veto such immediately.

If portraits are added to overdrive then it means some people can opt to use them or not-

Those who get the overdrive portraits see it IG, those who don't just see the hooded person image.


The problem with this is that overdrives have no guarantee to look the same for everyone. Sometimes numbers overlap or change, so my (insert portait number tag) is of a blonde haired woman, while someone elses portrait of the same value is an orc >.>.


I'm against adding hakpaks to download. Part of the brilliantness of this server is that it achieves so much without making people have to download anything.

Thank you for clarifying that. OK, as an override, this could be done, but with the caveat that not everyone will see YOUR pic depending on local override conditions.

The only remaining concern is IP (copyright) - all must be 100% properly documented as free to distribute (by artists own choice) - public domain. Is there enough of that sort of material out there to make such a portrait pack?

As an overide is doable and most places have that.  Yes, the majority of the pictures people have used elsewhere were not copyrighted.

Ie you would not use images which had copyright embossed over them or pictures with written copyright notices.

If you search many images are scattered on more than one site.  

Elgate you do have to download the CEP PAK to play here.

It is no big deal just a thought.

This one image alone had been posted on at least ten different sites.

Just because they pop up on multiple sites doesn't mean there not copyrighted:

At the bottom is does show the copyright symbol and date. So they may be a bit lax and don't check (or have the means) to reinforce their copyright claim and sure, it's not a huge deal, seeing as no one is profitting, but ODA really dislikes copyright infringement.

And yes, I know you have to download the CEP. But you have to do that for almost all servers- but there's no hakpak requirements. You download the CEP to basically enjoy online servers and to improve gameplay.


But it's really not too much of an issue to make an overide available.

I can understand Oda's concern's and respect that.  Still as an override it only affects the individuals computer and cannot be seen by others.

I will only endorse the use of such an override if all the images have the pedigree documented. I never advocate taking without permission. This is about respecting IP, and I'm very strict on that.

What would be the documentation you would require?

When you select a piece of art, include a list of each art item, the name of the author/source, and a link to the artists release of the work or statement it is 'public domain', copyleft or similar. Each portrait should have a pedigree. We should be able to say who authored it, and that it was specifically released.

I've seen LOTS of these portrait packs with stolen art in it (of course, most omit the copyright symbol or even artists sig, but that does not make it legit). If it is something to be associated with Argentum Regio, it has to be legit.
